I am a month away from walking away from my secure job which I love. I am leaving to go into a partnership with a friend who has already done all the hard work of establishing an exciting new company. I will be joining her to hopefully add value, fill some skillset gaps and have whole days of working at home in my pjs.
My role in my new company will be what my job role always is, at least in my successful positions, and that is one of the whelmerer (AKA the chaos structurer). Wtf is that? Basically in all my successful partnerships, I am always paired with someone who is a genius, brilliant with the ideas and the creativity. But attached to them is always a level of confusion as to what to do with this potential goldmine of ideas and energy. They get bogged down by trying to be organised and it stops them being productive. This is where I come in, when things become overwhelming, I bring them back to a level where they are just whelming again.
I also make sure things don’t slip into becoming underwhelming. This is even worse.
The role of a whelmerer is varied, sometimes therapist, sometimes declutter consultant, sometimes personal assistant, life coach, operations or project manager. The job titles can be varied too. In my role of a whelmerer, my official job titles have ranged from mail services assistant
to programmes coordinator to individual giving manager to now business partner.
A whelmerer has to be patient, a creative problem solver, a good listener, a practical solutioner (yes I know I am now just making up words all over the shop), and preferably a whizz at excel.
Get in touch if you need some whelmering.
