I am a collector. I collect issues, setbacks and conditions. I used to just have Foreign Dad Syndrome, Confused Cultural Identity, Always Cold and Dyslexia. Soon I added Fear of the Dark, Weight Management, Anxiety, Female In A Patriarchy and Every Kind Of Failed Relationship Under The Sun to my growing repertoire. Recently I even managed to acquire the Divorced Arab Woman card, although that’s not as rare as it used to be, and Occasional Insomnia.
At my weekly sessions, my counselor tries to reduce my collection, but I must be better at this game than her. I have lost Crippling Self Doubt and Regular Panic Attacks to her, but my assemblage still remains strong.
As a result, I need to talk a lot. And I think this is important, because I know I am not the only one going through these things and I want you to know whatever you’re going through, you’re not alone either.
I am 50% Belgian and 50% Palestinian. I am 100% both. I have lived in Belgium, the States, the Netherlands and, since I was 7, in London or thereabouts.
I don’t know what my accent is, don’t be clever and try to guess Canadian or Irish (unless there’s a bet involved) just because it sounds American-ish but not quite. It is just the language that us international kids got stuck with.
I have a BA in Environment and Society from Kings College, London (your guess is as good as mine, and they literally discontinued the course while I was on it). I then got my MSc in Sustainable Development and have worked mainly in the charity sector ever since, always with a focus on Palestine.
